HGL Courses Host Paul Lawrie Winter Series Events16/11/2015
Yesterday saw the start of a new winter programme for young players being run by the Paul Lawrie Foundation in the Highlands, with the three HGL courses all hosting events in the coming months.
This commendable initiative teed off at my own club, Nairn GC, and is aimed at boys and girls aged 18 to allow them to continue to play competitive golf between November and March.
Stephen Roger, who carded a round of 70, posted the best scratch score, ahead of Calvin Duffton (71) and Fintan McKenna (76).
Rory Cromarty (handicap 7), was top net scorer with a 67, ahead of Ben Patience (9), who shot 69 and Finlay Smith (9) with a 70.
The series will reach our HGL partner courses at Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart on 23 January and 27 March.
We all recognise the importance of supporting junior golf and are only too happy to help Paul and the foundation get this started and try to ensure it is a success. The HGL courses are obvious venues to host the series and we all signed-up straight away.
This is the latest project by PLF since it extended its reach into the Highlands earlier this year with a launch at Nairn Golf Club which is one of four founding sponsors – the others being Cairngorm Windows, Clubhouse Hotel and the Hawco Group.
The first tournament arranged in the Highlands under the PLF banner was held on 3 May when Nairn hosted the Paul Lawrie Foundation Junior Open which was won by Sandy Scott, a Nairn member who also won last year’s PLF Junior Open in Cruden Bay and who has been assisted by the foundation previously.
Paul is a fantastic ambassador for the sport and since setting up his foundation in 2001 has been committed to supporting golfers at all levels in the north east and now the Highlands. Along with the coaches in the foundation, he should be applauded for all his hard work in attracting growing numbers of youngsters into the game and helping them fulfil their potential.
The Winter Series Programme will also be staged at Moray Golf Club’s New Course (12 December) and Tain Golf Club on 20 February.
Entry to these events is via the Foundation website www.paullawriefoundation.co.uk
